Australia’s black coal is highly valued worldwide for its usefulness in steel making and power generation. In 2008, Australia’s coal exports were estimated at over $46 billion, making it our number one export by a significant margin.1
Australia’s black coal is of high quality and the nation’s mines and transport networks can bring it to market very efficiently. As a result, Australia exports about 260Mt of coal each year, or about 30% of the world’s total coal export trade.1
By the end of the 2008 calendar year, this trade generated an estimated $46.6 billion in export income for Australia, more than any other product or service.1 The latest comparative export figures from the financial year ending June 2008 are shown below.
Australia exports coal to over 30 countries. Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and India are the biggest buyers, accounting for about three-quarters of the nation’s coal exports.3
