The Australian black coal industry understands the need to respond to the challenge of climate change and is committing more than $1 billion to the effort. With the participation of the Commonwealth and State governments and international partners, the projects funded by the Australian coal industry’s COAL21 Fund are helping to find solutions right now.
Through the COAL21 Fund , the member companies of the Australian Coal Association will invest over $1 billion towards the development of a new generation of coal technologies. These funds are being raised through a voluntary levy on black coal production. It is the largest whole-of-industry low-emissions technology development fund in the world.

The Commonwealth government has committed $500 million to fund research through the National Low Emissions Coal Council and Carbon Storage Taskforce. The Council will deliver a national approach to research, and develop a national strategy aimed at accelerating the development and demonstration of low-emissions coal technologies.
What’s more, Australian State governments have collectively pledged over $500 million for low-emissions coal technology development as well.
Government partnerships
Responding to global climate change will require a global commitment. Australia is an active member in international bodies that are helping to coordinate carbon capture and storage technology research, as well as help share this knowledge worldwide.
Australia is also partnering with overseas companies in several major Australian research and demonstration projects, including the Callide Oxyfuel Project
